Firing up the heap

Given the absence of plant material we have to resort to other waste to help with the composting process. One of the items we incorporate is shredded paper, to help get it going I place kitchen waste in the centre and dampen the paper which is contained in a black plastic refuse sack.

It would seem that the black coloured bag holds the heat from the sun; and warms up the material inside which in turn activates the decay process in the kitchen waste, which is insulated by the paper. After a week to ten days I mix it all in the heap.
